Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Protocols

What are the IHS Clinical Protocols and Workflows?

IHS has developed disease-specific clinical protocols/workflows for pharmacists and clinicians to use when assessing and counseling patients on specialty medications. These protocols provide prompts and checklists for gathering all necessary information during patient assessments and counseling sessions as a part of your specialty patient management program (PMP).

The purpose of the clinical protocols is to assist clinicians in managing the pharmacotherapy of specialty patients by providing clinical decision support and structure. Each protocol follows the medication therapy management (MTM) model, which includes an initial assessment, education and counseling, and reassessments. Additionally, a general intervention protocol is available that can be applied to all disease states.

The clinical protocols were created to help specialty pharmacies meet URAC and ACHC requirements for patient management and plan of care documentation as a part of your patient management program. They come with pre-built note and documentation templates, which enable clinicians to document their interactions with patients more efficiently and consistently. These templates are designed to comply with accreditation standards, ensuring that documentation is in line with the required standards. The protocols are based on clinical evidence and guidelines and include a resource page and citations throughout each protocol.

Each protocol covers one specialty disease state, such as HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, and more.

Who are these protocols for?

The protocols are designed for small to mid-size specialty pharmacies, health system specialty pharmacies, and small start-up PBMs who are looking for simple and/or customized protocols. We know that creating and maintaining clinical protocols can be time-consuming and require specific expertise that you may not have. That's why we've created these protocols for you. Our protocols are a great solution if you need something simple that meets accreditation requirements and/or if you want to have your own customized protocols but don't have the staff time and/or expertise to create or maintain them.

The protocols are especially useful for organizations who want to embed clinical protocols in their electronic health record (EHR) or other patient management software. See below for information on protocol integration with OnQueue patient management software.

How are the protocols customizable?

We understand that your business has unique needs, and that's why we offer customized solutions that work for you. Here's what we offer:

  • Template flexibility: We can work with our template, or use yours and provide the clinical information that is drug or disease state specific.

  • Compliance assurance: We ensure that the template meets regulatory and accreditation requirements, including URAC, ACHC, insurance/payer contracts, and any other requirements that our clients ask us to address. As certified consultants, we're especially skilled at writing protocols that meet the intent of accreditation or regulatory requirements.

  • Comprehensive coverage: Our protocols can include drug or disease state specific monitoring parameters or lab reviews, disease state-specific quality of life surveys (when applicable), non-pharmacologic treatment options, and/or disease-state specific FAQs. And if there's anything else you need, we can include it in the protocol.

  • Based on your scope of practice: Our protocols are drug or disease state specific, and are just for the drugs and/or disease states that you provide.

With our flexible approach, you get protocols that are tailored to your business needs, and you can trust that they meet all necessary requirements you ask us to meet.

How can organizations purchase the protocols?

Our specialty pharmacy disease-state specific clinical protocols are available for purchase on a per-disease state basis, so you only pay for what you need. The basic protocol is priced with a fixed rate, and we offer a low monthly rate for ongoing maintenance. We also provide payment plans if needed.

If you would like customizable protocols, we will work with you to determine the exact elements you want and propose a fair rate based on estimated time and effort to customize your protocols.

IHS Integrates Clinical Protocols with OnQueue Patient Management Technology

December 18, 2023

Integral Healthcare Solutions (IHS) today announces that it has partnered with the OnQueue patient workflow platform to deliver standardized, yet personalized specialty pharmacy protocols via their platform.  This will now expand the reach of the curated IHS protocols into new pharmacies, and allow for the existing OnQueue users to further curate clinical offerings for their patients.

Through this relationship, OnQueue customers will have the ability to access disease state-specific clinical processes and workflows, compliant with URAC and/or ACHC patient management requirements.  Content will flow directly into OnQueue, allowing for comprehensive patient management in one integrated system.

OnQueue, has also negotiated bundled discounts for pharmacies that require greater than ten disease state-specific workflows.

“I’m thrilled to begin offering curated content via the OnQueue Cloud,” said Jonathan Ogurchak, PharmD, CSP, CEO & Founder of STACK, OnQueue’s parent company.  “We continue to push the envelope with innovative integrations, and the relationship with IHS is just another one that can better streamline and standardize patient care.”

Full integration will be finalized later this calendar year, but review of available protocols can be conducted by scheduling time with the IHS team.
